ABOUT KAATSKILL LIFE MAGAZINE
Kaatskill Life is a regional journal celebrating the Catskill Area. Published quarterly, our editorials and calendar items focus on Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties; and present a variety of topics such as , History, Culture, Arts and Crafts, Folk Culture, Sports, Events of a Regional Nature, Issues concerning the future of the region, The Environment, Local Personalities, Human Interest Items, Hiking, Books and Lodging Reviews all abundantly illustrated. Also featured are photo spreads by individual photographers and a 6 county comprehensive Calendar of Events.
The spelling of Kaatskill Life is derived from the Dutch. “Kaats” meaning cats, “kill” (“or kil,kyl”) meaning creeks or streams. When the area was first settled by the Dutch, late 17th early 18th centuries, they encountered many mountain lions and bobcats, (“Kaats”) as well as an abundance of streams and creeks (“kyl,kil”) “kil” was later changed to “kill” and “kaats” to Cats. Many waterways in the region still retain “kill” in their names, such as, Wallkill, Catskill, Kauterskill, Westkill, Cobleskill.
