July 3 & 4; Catskills Camp-In (Virtual Event). Join us for a virtual Catskills adventure from the comfort of your couch, blanket fort, or backyard tent. (Haven’t you been looking for an excuse to set it up?!) Nature-themed fun for all ages will be posted on the Catskills Visitor Center Facebook page throughout the weekend - pop in for a few minutes when you can, or follow along with our whole schedule as it happens.

We'll explore birdwatching, fossil hunting, animal tracking, hiking and many other topics through videos, interactive games, printable activities, and more. Programs are geared for beginners and families, and meant to inspire simple, accessible adventures in your own home or neighborhood, wherever you live. Join us each evening for live featured events to connect us as a virtual community of people who love the Catskills, and stay online a bit later on Saturday night for a spectacular showing of Catskills-inspired "fireworks" across social media.

Friday July 3

10am - Camping
Even as we #recreate local and explore close to home, it's important to be prepared. Olivia has all the tips you need to get ready for your next adventure and find the perfect campsite - on the trail or in your own backyard. Then check out our inspiration for making your own homemade maps and building a "campsite" wherever you are, with whatever you've got!

12pm - Hiking Bring your lunch and (virtually) hike with us in the Catskills. When you're ready to stretch your legs IRL, download or print our sensory walk activity to take your next neighborhood stroll to the next level.

2pm - Birdwatching is a great way to connect with nature, whether on a remote trail or just looking out your apartment window. Our guide will give you everything you need to get started in just a few minutes. While you're waiting to spot that elusive Bicknell's Thrush, may we recommend taking a quiz to find out Which Catskills Bird Best Matches Your Personality?

4pm - Catskill Wildlife Can you identify these common Catskills animals? Play our ID game and learn more about the animals that live in the Catskills. Learn how to identify different animal tracks and even create your own.

7pm - Stars: An Interactive Book Reading and Program - LIVE. Join science celebrity and award-winning author Steve “The Dirtmeister” Tomecek for an interactive on-line reading of his book, Stars. This is one of five titles that Steve has written for the highly acclaimed Jump Into Science book series published by National Geographic and it answers many of the basic questions about the stars that we see at night, including what they are made of, why they have different colors, and how they change throughout the year. The program will be presented through Zoom and participants will have the opportunity to “chat” with Steve and ask questions about stars as well as his work as a scientist and author. As part of the program, we will also be discussing what celestial objects and constellations will be visible that evening and some tips on how to observe them. Participants must pre-register for the program here and will receive a link to the Zoom meeting via email prior to the program.

Saturday July 4th

10am - Nature Zine Making Zines are handmade mini magazines or books. Watch Kelli’s video of simple prompts and ideas to get started making your own nature zine. Gather up your scrap paper, markers, colored pencils, stickers, collage material, or whatever else inspires you.

12pm - Citizen Science. The world needs more citizen scientists - curious people of all ages - to track everything from bird migration to the effects of climate change and the spread of invasive species. Bring your lunch and enjoy a program with Katie and Olivia on the basics, and then use our printable scavenger hunt to start looking for clues in your own backyard.

2pm - On the Water We’re heading to the stream for a virtual fossil hunt! If you know what to look for, you can see evidence of our prehistoric past throughout the Catskills. Kelli's video will offer some fossil-hunting basics, and additional activities might inspire you to see what (and who) else you can find on your next splash in a stream.

4pm - Campfire Cooking & Celebration We're sharing some of our favorite festive and campfire-friendly recipes - and looking forward to seeing what you're creating!

7pm - Mountain Tales and Sing-Along with Story Laurie - LIVE. Gather around the (virtual) campfire and enjoy a live performance by Laurie McIntosh (aka Story Laurie), an enchanting Catskills-based entertainer who transports listeners of all ages with her delightful renditions of folk tales and vibrantly entertaining, socially-conscious songs. Join us on Zoom here (pre-registration not required).

8pm - #CatskillsFourthOfJuly Virtual Fireworks - LIVE
Check out the hashtag #CatskillsFourthOfJuly at 8pm all across social media to see holiday posts and pictures from organizations and businesses from all around the Catskills. We’re bringing the entire Catskills virtually together.

JULY 26; 9 AM–4 PM:  THE SEQUENTIAL NARRATIVE. The vivid exploration of The Sequential Narrative is sure to embolden you to the thrill of creating graphic dynamism through color, form and panel rhythm. This vivid exploration will embolden you to the thrill of conveying an abstract story by creating graphic dynamism through color, form and panel rhythm. Welcome to the revolutionary genre of our time that has captivated artists the world over and gained a significant worldwide audience. In this workshop you will be presented with a history of abstract sequential art to current trends. Through several anthologies on the subject, I offer you a veritable feast of creative individuals and their work. You will join the ranks of these cutting edge pioneers by creating your own narrative. Whether a beginner or seasoned artist you will be all hands on board! An abstract sequential narrative is a series of pictures telling a story. It is the transformation of a composition through time. It can be formally structural or loosely playful or both. You may reduce or alter the constraint of the panel grid. Graphic dynamism becomes un-tethered if you loosen the barriers and thus create a story without borders. From European zine publishers to Japanese Manga comics to American graphic novels you will join the avant-garde to create a flash point in the legendary trove of storytelling. We employ all tools and media. I will demonstrate unusual tools and wet and dry material combinations to suit your pleasure. Suitable for all levels, no experience necessary! Ages 19+. $141 ($140 tuition + $1 lab fee) In an effort to maintain our non-toxic environment, the Woodstock School of Art  does not permit the use of turpentine or mineral spirits in the painting studios. AUGUST 29; “ DRIVE-IN” OPERA LIVE PERFORMANCE: Puccini’s Tosca. In what is likely a first in the world of musical performance and certainly a first in the global world of grand opera, this year’s live opera staging, typically the anchoring highlight of its annual summer music Festival.

We are working with local authorities to finalize a location for the production.  As at a typical drive-in movie, the audience will drive right into parking slots, sound will be provided two ways, audience will relax, and enjoy the show. Both the venue and the technology ensure that audience members stay safe in their cars while musicians and staff “socially distance” themselves onstage or behind it.

Tosca is one of the most widely performed operas of all time. Vibrant with passion and politics, it is as dramatic as it is lyrical, with some of Puccini’s most ecstatically rhapsodic music. The cast features Joyce El-Khoury as Tosca, Dimitri Pittas as her lover, Mario Cavaradossi, and bass-baritone Kyle Albertson as Baron Scarpia. Working with our team is Danish producer P. Scenen, who presented a drive-in concert in Denmark in April featuring Danish singer-songwriter Mads Langer.

The drive-in performance marks a departure for us, which for a decade has been a three-day, multi-venue, multi-event celebration of the human voice held in the hamlet of Phoenicia in the town of Shandaken, in the northwestern corner of Ulster County. The move to a one-night festival that protects people’s health, is both a response to the corona virus pandemic and another way we are expanding the means of bringing   great music to ever-wider audiences. It is a necessary change, but temporary. We look forward to being back home in Phoenicia in 2021!

Innovation is nothing new for us, which 11 years ago turned a fund-raising concert for the local children's playground equipment into a multi-day festival that draws thousands of people to Phoenicia every summer simply not possible during the current health crisis. Among the innovations planned for this performance is the use of augmented reality, in which computer-generated perceptual information enhances what the singers and orchestra are expressing for example, by making audience members feel they really are in Rome, Italy. September 28; 9AM: Walk/Hike. The rocks were one of naturalist John Burroughs' favorite aspects of the Slabsides location, but even he did not realize that the rocks represented sediments eroded from a Himalayan-scale mountain range nearly 400 million years ago. Since they were deposited in a shallow sea, the sediments were repeatedly caught in continental collisions which bent them and stood them literally on end. As if that wasn't enough, they were most recently scraped clean by a mile-thick sheet of glacial ice which melted a mere 14,000 years ago. Join Vassar College geology professor Jeff Walker for hike to read the many stories in the rocks of the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary. The newly developed trails are part of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail System. Meet at Slabsides. John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary at Slabsides Burroughs Drive, off Floyd Ackert Rd.
